I've read the book several times over the years. For me it was a great adventure to another world that was like earth but so much different. I have almost every single book in the series. I first started reading this novel when I was 14, I'm 64 now. Overall, this book simply does not deliver, not on character, and not even on the underlying fantasy. Honestly, the frequency with which this occurs actually undermines how powerful and cool the hero is supposed to be since anybody can be saved by pure happenstance.
Maybe it is because he has supernaturally good luck given how many dire situations he is miraculously saved from. Additionally, with only a few weeks of training, the protagonist becomes, literally, THE BEST swordsman in the story, is given THE BEST tarn, and is THE ONLY ONE capable of stopping the antagonist. Their shallow writing makes their scenes, and by extension, the romantic elements, just feel boring. And even their other traits are included mostly to show how awesome our hero is that he can woo them. While they are both brave, strong-willed, and clever, the most important thing (and what the author focuses on most) is that they are beautiful. I think in total, we meet only two named female characters, and both of them either are, or are treated like, slaves. However, for me, these were outweighed by.
The narrator did an excellent job presenting the story and there were some very interesting ideas here, such as the spider people, the tarns, and the concept of the home stones.
