And, let's face it, a lot of the content is on the immature side, which is a problem with most adult colouring books. These have some lovely images, that are ruined by publishing choices. surely they ought to have been fold outs?

The double page spreads are absolutely ruined by travelling through the ditch made by the spine. You can combat this somewhat by extensive shading, but it can be exhausting around hundreds of tiny leaves. I did wish so hard for a pale grey or sienna outline - I don't really like the cartoon look of the black lines showing through. It's ok for the author to say it's okay if you go outside the lines, but it's not for some of us! Especially if you are persnicketty like me and want something you spent hours doing to relax, to be as good a result as you can get, and not stress you out by being too difficult to get the result you like. I wish I did use fineliners, some of the areas are so tiny that even a very sharp pencil barely makes it. So test your chosen brand of pencil before you jump in - I don't use fineliners or markers, so I can't say about those. If you want to use expensive pencils, you'll get a better result, but I don't waste my good ones on colouring books, I use them for saleable art. The book paper doesn't have a good amount of tooth, and some pencil brands don't work that well. I've bought several copies of most of her books - I'm also hoping to scan and print some pictures on decent paper in a light grey or sienna. Like all colouring books though, the print is too black, so if you're going for a less 'childish' effect, you somehow have to lighten the lines - for heaven's sake can we not make it a rule that all colouring pages on white paper need to be printed in a light/medium grey? Then you can go for any effect you like without a struggle. Not too keen on the treasure hunts - the objects generally spoil the design for me, but that's just me - a lot of people love it, so if you love that kind of thing, this is for you! The designs are lovely, and you can colour as simply or as complexly as you like. I love Johanna Basford's colouring books, they're better than most.
